About Toto

The band Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group took their name from the Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back is a failure, but they rebound with their fourth release Isolation with two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour makes Toto a household name across the world.
After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is different from the ballads of previous albums, and features some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.
In the course of recording the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are financially in trouble. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to an alternative producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.
In 1999, the band released Mindfields and begins an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

Toto composed their first and only film score in 1984 for the film Dune. It was a massive project, and the entire group had to be involved. The album that was released, Kingdom of Desire, was a record that also had a great success. The next year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the last time all of Toto's original members appeared together on stage at the same time. Following this, the group was again disbanded. Toto returned for a benefit concert in 2010 to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time all original Toto members had been on stage together in over 31 years. The original members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

Toto has remained one of the most popular rock bands for over three decades, having scored massive hits such as "Rosanna," "Hold The Line,"" and their 8X-platinum smash, "Africa." With a variety of influences, from progressive rock to world beats to soul and jazz, the group continues to please their fans with their acoustic arena rock.
Despite their popularity, the band faced several challenges in their final years. In 2002 the drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence due to health issues. Shem von Schröeck was brought in to replace him, but the band wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, a series of lineup changes and a series of albums that were disappointing led Toto to end their tour for a couple of years. The group returned to the road in 2012 after the release of the album 40 Trips Around The Sun.
The album was a return to form for the band and the tour supported it with sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was made more exciting by the inclusion of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, who had both rejoined the band.
Toto's music is just as relevant today as it was during the 1970s and 1980s, as it has gained new fans with each generation. Their success has made them a long-lasting part of pop culture, and their live performances are always filled with energy and excitement.
